The Last Time

"The Last Time" is the eighth track on Angels & Ghosts.

Lyrics

One hand in my pocket
One foot in the grave
Standing here, waiting to be saved
This will be the last time
Scratching my patience away
Oh no, oh no
Just take your time now, take it slow
Oh no, oh no
Take your time here, take it slow
Have you ever followed Jesus
He lives downtown LA
He's coming. He'll be here
It's where He prays
This will be my last time
Scratching and tapping my troubles away
Oh no, oh no
Just take your time now, take it slow
Oh no, oh no
Take your time here, take it slow
This will be my last time, I'll just say goodbye
Time, you know, will just pass you by
This will be my last time

My Take

I absolutely love the bass line in this song. That coupled with the western-style reverb of the lead guitar and slow, swinging waltz beat give me a very chill (but not bored) vibe and I can definitely imagine listening to this in a dark Los Angeles pub or something. I am wondering what the sense of finality in the lyrics is about, though, and if it is coming from someone who is simply disillusioned with everything in the world (there's that theme again!) or if they really are planning on leaving...(for instance, are these sentiments coming from current sober Dave or a past, suicidal Dave?) I also thought I'd mention that the "Jesus living in downtown LA" part conjures up particular memories of my regular visits to Southern California. So, somewhere on the Santa Monica Pier (which is very close to downtown L.A.), there is a busker who hangs out there who goes by the name, Rock 'n Roll Jesus. He plays a guitar and he is indeed dressed up like Jesus. Here is a photo of him below from 2015. He's been there every year since I can remember.

Anyway, Dave is becoming quite the poet with all of this songwriting!
