I Want It All

"I Want It All" is the seventh track on Playing the Angel.

Lyrics

I see a river
It's oceans that I want
You have to give me everything
But everything's not enough
It's my desire
To give myself to you
Sometimes
Sometimes I try
Sometimes I lie with you
Sometimes I cry
Sometimes I die it's true
Somewhere I find something that's kind in you
And I've crossed the line again
A line I drew in the sand
And still you give me everything
But everything's not enough
I'm ready but not willing
To give myself to you
Sometimes
Come on over lay down beside me
And I'll try
Come on over lay down beside me
And I'll try
And I'll try
I want it all

My Take

The beat in this song sounds very similar to "We Will Rock You" by Queen but of course it has the special Depeche Mode touch of being purely made of synths, which to me, sounds a little like a radio receiver going on the fritz or something. The arpeggiated melody is a very nice touch, but for me, it's Dave's vocal here that shines the brightest. One would think with beseeching lyrics like these, he would sing them loudly in his classic boom-y tone, but he actually sings these words softly and tenderly, as if he's sitting with someone and having a quiet, heart-to-heart conversation. There is strong emotion found in the vocals, though, and to me, sounds like it's coming from someone who has perhaps just acted in a way they hadn't meant to (a heated outburst, maybe?) and has now come down from that outburst and trying to explain to them or to themselves what it is they're really feeling. And it's completely relatable, especially to someone who is very indecisive like I am. I also want to point out that the isolated refrain of "Sometimes" that Dave and Martin both sing in unison reminds me of the exact same refrain from "Clean" ("I just know that I like what is starting to show...sometimes"). This is quite a decent song, but one thing that I honestly could do without, though, is the prolonged outro after Dave sings the final words, "I want it all," as it continues with the "We Will Rock You"-esque beat and random abstract synth noises on top- no real melody or anything else, for over a minute before coming to an end.
