"Long Time Lie" is the first track on the Delta Machine deluxe edition bonus disc.

Lyrics

It's been a while since you did something
Not so long since you complained
You sit around here doing nothing
Every day
You're the coward who points the finger
I understand that I'm helping you
You have delusions in some spaced-out fantasy
That's what you do
He loves to wallow in the glory
Loves to cut you down to size
Try to make you believe in all of his lies
It's been a long, long, long, long, long, long, time
It's been a long, long, long, long, long, long, time
A long time lie
Don't you ever look in the mirror
Don't you know there's so much more
Locked up inside that box behind your door
All your twisted conversations
When you're sitting all alone
Just remember we know your secret
While you moan
He loves to wallow in the glory
Loves to cut you down to size
Try to make you believe in all of his lies
It's been a long, long, long, long, long, long, time
It's been a long, long, long, long, long, long, time
A long time lie

Dave's Take

"At the end of the album, after we worked on 'Long Time Lie' together, Martin asked me 'Would you be interested in me sending you things to write to?' And I was like, 'If it's as abstract as just sending me interesting sounds or chords and atmosphere, then yeah, I'll come up with the rest.' I can sit down and work out songs and chords, but I prefer bouncing ideas off someone else. I think it was Martin's way of complementing me that I'm a good enough songwriter now. That after ten years he feels like we're on the same kind of page."1

My Take

Depeche Mode have always been really good at making songs sound so attractively dirty and sleazy and this song is no exception to that. The industrial sounds are somewhat reminiscent of those on Some Great Reward and Black Celebration. I also love the rap beat and the way Dave sings the verses, as well as the harmonization with Martin in the chorus. After three decades of working together, we finally have a true song collaboration between the two! If this is the kind of result one can expect from Gahan-Gore songwriting, then I'm all for it! I can understand why this might've been left off of Delta Machine proper, though. It really belongs on an album of its own. In fact, I would say that all of the songs on this bonus disc are quite unique and are underrated gems on their own.
