Love Will Leave

Single?
Yes, released as the B-Side along with "Saw Something" and "Deeper and Deeper" on January 14, 2008

"Love Will Leave" is the B-Side of the "Saw Something" and "Deeper and Deeper" double A-side single.

Lyrics

Love will leave you
Cold and lonely
Love will lift you
Up to the sky
Break your heart
All so slowly
Never give a reason why
In time
We all want to be hurt
Wasting precious time
It all seems so absurd
You had your chance now wait in line
You said your words
They sound so holy
You can have me if you like
Don't pretend
That you know me
There is no reason why
In time
In time
We all want to be hurt
Wasting precious time
It all seems so absurd
You had your chance now wait in line
We all want to be hurt
Wasting precious time
It all seems so absurd
You had your chance now wait in line

My Take

For this review, I compared the only two versions of this song that are available in physical format- Das Shadow's Rewerk and the Kap10kurt Remix. If you are not familiar with those names, just know that Das Shadow is Andrew Phillpott's band (Andrew worked with Dave on Hourglass) and Kap10kurt is Kurt Uenala's artist name (Kurt has also worked on music with Dave). In conclusion, I have to say that between these two, I prefer the Kap10kurt Remix by far. No disrespect to Andrew, but the fact that Dave's voice is heavily processed in the Das Shadow Rewerk bothered me, as it always does when it is. It's also kind of heavy on the bass drum sound, with a beat very, very similar to the later Depeche Mode song, "In Sympathy." This didn't bother me so much, but I just liked the subdued beats on the Kap10kurt Remix better.

The lyrics are quite intriguing. They perfectly describe the roller coaster of emotions and drama experienced in certain love relationships. The chorus of "We all want to be hurt / Wasting precious time / It all seems so absurd / You had your chance now wait in line" kind of sounds like the commentary of someone who has been through a lot of relationships. And I mean, who actually wants to be hurt and get their heart broken? Perhaps someone who is a serial monogamist? On that vein, that phrase really reminds me of the line from "The Meaning of Love" by Depeche Mode, "Love seems something like wanting a scar," which was written from the point-of-view of someone who has never experienced it before. I feel like this song is speaking to that young and naive person, in particular, and maybe even warning them. It is, admittedly, a weird comparison as I know the two songs are miles apart sonically, but it's just a thought. And some people do tend to "waste precious time" being in bad relationships, don't they? Then, when it's over, it's as if Dave is saying here with the last line that the person had their chance to have a good relationship but instead screwed things up (or maybe the other person did). So, they can only just "wait in line" for the next one to come along, which will hopefully go better.
