Miracles

Single?
No

"Miracles" is the fifth track on Hourglass.

Lyrics

I don't believe in miracles
And they happen everyday
I don't believe in Jesus
But I'm praying anyway
I want to accept the truth
I really do, I believe
I'm just afraid of losing you
I read it in the paper
And I've watched them on TV
I've seen it in the movies
They say the truth will set you free
I want to accept the truth
I really do, I believe
I'm just afraid of losing you
I'm just afraid of losing you
I'm just afraid of losing you

Dave's Take

Dave's thoughts on this particular song are in the beginning of the video below. This video (of which there are two parts on YouTube) was originally on the DVD included in the Special Edition release of Hourglass.

My Take

There is not much of a melody or catchy hook at all in this, but instrumentally-speaking, the bright and ethereal-sounding synths are simply beautiful. But it's the lyrics that are very intriguing. Dave is declaring that he does not believe in certain concepts within the Christian religion, but he practices certain things, anyway (e.g., praying). It's not just a declaration of atheism or agnosticism, though, as there are confessions of wanting "to accept the truth." It seems that he has faith in something- he is just struggling to know what it is and where it's coming from. It's deeply personal. I should also mention that the CD booklet which has these lyrics, handwritten by Dave, has a misspelling (i.e., "I want to except the truth"), but more fascinating is that it seems to have a whole third verse crossed out. It looks like it says:

I don't believe in your religion
How can I explain
The world in which I am living
Seems very far away

By the way, I love seeing handwritten lyrics from my favorite artists, and the rougher they are, the better! It reveals a lot about the artist and their thought processes; I get that it may not always feel comfortable or professional to share stuff like that, so when they do, it truly feels like a treat.
