Lyrics

When you break up the boys from the men
It feels just like me and them
And for the love of a hardened heart
Do something with your hands
When you pick up a book with no end
It feels just like me again
And for the love of your open arms
Do something with your hands
I've got a sickness
I think I need your help tonight
Stones in your bloodstream
I think I'm getting out tonight
I've got a sickness
I think I need your help tonight
Stones in your bloodstream
I think I'm getting out tonight, out tonight
When I said you could live on my back
I don't remember saying that
And for the love of an aged friend
Do something for yourself
You eventually fall off the end
It feels just like me again
And for the price of a human heart
It's really not that bad
I've got a sickness
I think I need your help tonight
Iron in your bloodstream
I think I'm getting out tonight
I've got a sickness
I think I need your help tonight
Iron in your bloodstream
I think I'm getting out tonight, out tonight

My Take

This synth-laden song is catchy and very '80s-sounding! To me, it sounds more like Pet Shop Boys or Human League than Depeche Mode...maybe Speak and Spell Depeche Mode? But anyway, how cool is it to get Dave to sing with you on your debut album??? And not only that, frYars was approached by Dave, not the other way around.1 So apparently, Dave saw something here that was intriguing...anyway, what a treat! Dave's contributions are very simple, though- as backup singer, he does not provide lead vocals; on this song, he just sings the lower octave to frYars' higher one during the chorus, which gives it a fuller sound and dare I say very similar to how he sings with Martin Gore on Depeche Mode songs. But frYars is the leader here and in the spotlight. I would say my overall impression of the track is that it's not bad and I like the "blast from the past" feel I get from it, but it's pretty unremarkable, otherwise.

Music Video

frYars sings while backlit by a bright light, casting blue and violet hues around him. Throughout the video, there are various light and color effects employed on his figure and face making for a very 1980s-style futuristic light show. Every now and then, another man half-covered in shadow is shown wearing sunglasses with his back to a window covered in venetian blinds singing along to the chorus- it is none other than Dave Gahan! There really is no storyline here; it is simply a bombardment of visual effect after visual effect that surrounds the two singers as they sing individually.

My Take

As I mentioned above, this video has no storyline, but the visual effects are kind of neat. I especially like the colored lights that appear on the artist's mouth and eyes, making him look like a futuristic alien shooting lasers out of his face. And it kind of reminds me of when Dave carried the LED lights in his mouth in the video for "Kingdom;" that was one video that definitely played with light and color effects a lot, as well. Speaking of Dave, yes, he does appear in this video but only for very short periods of time and he's covered in shadow for most of it. In other words, it's great to see him but blink or you may miss him!
