Breathe

Single?
Yes, released as the B-Side along with "I Need You" on August 18, 2003

"Breathe" is the B-Side of the "I Need You" single.

Lyrics

A sudden calm inside of me
Now everything is better
Together in a safe warm place
I remember when I met you
I took your hand
You guided me
Even felt much clever
Bought your love
Soft and white
Just a soft pink letter
Breathe for me
Breathe for me
Breathe for me
We can be together
If you breathe for me
All the trees have lost their leaves
It's hard to lift my eyes
Haven't seen the sun for weeks now
Is it day or night
Can't remember where I met you
Don't know if I'm here
Think I need a little help to
Take away my fear
Breathe for me
Breathe for me
Breathe for me
We can be together
If you breathe for me
Breathe for me
Breathe for me
Breathe for me
Put your hands in my hands
You can bleed for me
Could you breathe for me?

My Take

I have mixed feelings about this song. On the one hand, I think the chorus is really beautiful, and I like the folksy, almost Britpop-like sound overall. But the verses are just...okay. I think it's the unconventional chord changes that mostly throw me off. And I am somewhat left feeling like something is missing- something small, but nonetheless, I feel like there's a gap between the mediocrity of the verses and the beautiful chorus that just has to be filled somehow. I'll also mention that as the song begins and ends, there is this "whoosh"-ing sound, like a wind, or blowing of air and it comes up behind the instrumentation every now and then. Of course, it has to be an allusion to breathing, and it somewhat reminds me of the synthetic gurgling noises heard in "Blasphemous Rumours," especially at the part in the lyrics that go, "ended up on a life support machine." The "breath" sounds in this song don't sound so synthetic, but I just thought I'd draw that connection. The lyrics are pretty powerful, though, and to me, could speak of someone broken and trying to recover by depending on someone else to figuratively breathe for them, or perhaps someone afraid of losing someone else who is dying (e.g., "show me signs of life- breathe for me").
