Lyrics

Running around a gigantic tree
Round and round
I can't shake free
Maybe
Looking behind you're much closer to me
The man I fear
He lives inside of me
Maybe
I know I can swim
But what if I drown
I know I can't win
When you're not around
Maybe
Thought you left me when I put her down
I know I can swim
But what if I drown
Maybe
Standing in the middle of a crowded room
Feels like hell
Take me home soon
Maybe
I know I can swim
But what if I drown
I know I can't win
If you're not around
Maybe

My Take

Wow, what a beautiful and underrated gem this song is! It is a very light-sounding folk-rock ballad, with the only instrumentation being an acoustic guitar. And when Dave comes in with his soft and feathery vocals, I actually was skeptical that it was even him at first because it sounded so unlike anything I've heard from him before- even on other stripped-down ballads. The quality of his voice here almost sounds like he's channeling Neil Young or Bob Dylan. And when he soars into those high notes, it just blows me away. This guy is full of surprises, let me tell you! The lyrics are very simple and minimalistic and seem to refer to the struggle between a current self and a former self or, perhaps as another possibility, self and an omnipresent deity. He's trying to get away from that person/being but he also knows that he can't cut the cord with them completely because he relies on them to a certain extent. The repeated refrains of "maybe" drive home that overwhelming feeling of uncertainty and fear.
