Stay

No

"Stay" is the sixth track on Paper Monsters.

Lyrics

She's softly breathing next to me
A shining angel sent to me
From where she came it's hard to say
Tiny star she guides my way
When we were lovers
We both discovered
Stay, you can leave tomorrow
Stay, wait until tomorrow
Please stay
Living here in shades of grey
Color she's light a reason to stay
From where she came it's hard to say
Tiny star she guides my way
When we were lovers
We both discovered
Stay, you can leave tomorrow
Stay, wait until tomorrow
Please stay (tiny star)
Please stay (tiny star)
Please stay (tiny star)
Please stay

Dave's Take

In the video below, Dave says that "Stay" is about his daughter, Stella Rose:

My Take

This is a beautiful ballad and I love the way Dave sings it- softly and tenderly. The instrumentation is also very soft and minimal, and organic- not a synthesizer in sight (or sound) as far as I can tell. Anyway, Dave has said in interviews that this song is about his daughter, Stella Rose, who was just a baby at the time. You can tell that he has a very special relationship with her; as Alan Wilder once put it, he was "besotted with" her.1 Being very close to my dad, myself, I have to say that is extremely sweet. Anyway, she is referred to as "tiny star" which is kind of cool considering "Stella" means "star" in Latin, Italian, and Greek.

I've included a couple of videos below of Dave talking about Stella Rose. The second one is from 2015 so she was much older by this time but it's always precious to hear someone gushing about members of their family.

This video focuses on Dave's memories from 101 and other events in the past, but his daughter is mentioned around the 0:31 mark.

Starting at the 15:09 mark, he talks about his daughter's talent as a singer.
