Bitterman

Single?
No

"Bitterman" is the ninth track on The Light the Dead See.

Lyrics

There's no tomorrow
Only yesterday
I may have drunk too much
Now I'll have to pay
So how far should I go
Oh that's hard to say
Wild is the sky
That covers you
Long be the night
That comforts you
Dark is the day confronting you
And pushing you
There's a face in the mirror
That I don't understand
See the one that I wear is not who I am
I made up my mind
And I want to stay
Wild is the sky
That covers you
Long be the night
That comforts you
Dark is the day confronting you
And pushing you
You're such a bitter man
Doing all that you can
In the name of fun
Just a bitter man
Taking all that you can
All for number one
There's no confusion
Only black
No questions left to ask
Like, am I coming back?
I made up my mind
And I want to stay
You're such a bitter man
Doing all that you can
In the name of fun
Just a bitter man
Taking all that you can
For the number one
You're such a bitter man
Doing all that you can
All in the name of fun
Just a bitter man
Taking all that you can
All for number one

Dave's Take

Dave and Rich Machin talk about this song at the 1:23 mark.

My Take

Imagine a Depeche Mode song with horns- specifially trumpets...kinda strange, huh? Okay, "Just Can't Get Enough" and "Love in Itself" had them, but those were synthesized. This song has the real thing, playing along when Dave sings the chorus. The time signature is also in 3/4 time just like a waltz. Because of these characteristics, this song is unlike any other song of Depeche Mode's or Dave's sonically-speaking, but the theme of the lyrics are at least familiar. They seem to be similar to Dave's earlier solo works like "Dirty Sticky Floors" and "Bottle Living," which were making fun of the alcoholic, or at least someone who has indulged too much in selfish desires that they have become a "bitter man." Although compounding the words together in the title makes me just think of a superhero name. And if you know me, you know that I would also be making a reference to robot master names in the Megaman video game series, too. In other words, here comes Bitterman! Opposite of Sweetman, he is a pessimist, hates everything, and he also tastes funny. However, he is weak against compliments, good deeds, and candy!
